Press release

Pocomoke receives funding to upgrade the Cypress Trail – Call for volunteers

The City of Pocomoke has received $40,000 in funding from the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) Recreational Trails Program for upgrading the wooden walking surface of the Cypress Trail with composite boards. The City is providing $19,763 in matching funds for this grant, to include $8,650 in cash with the remainder composed of staff and volunteer time.

The Cypress Trail is a 1.5-mile walking trail through Cypress trees and upland evergreen forest next to the Pocomoke River, designated a Wild and Scenic River. The trail provides a significant opportunity for the enjoyment of nature and is in close proximity to many other area attractions including the Delmarva Discovery Museum, the Mar-Va Theater, the Sturgis One-Room Schoolhouse and the Costen House, the historic home of the first mayor of Pocomoke.

The City of Pocomoke is looking for volunteers to begin work on the trail Monday, April 1 through Friday, April 5th from 8 am to 4 pm, Monday, April 8 through Friday, April 12 from 8 am to 4 pm,  and Saturday, April 13 from 9 am to 4 pm . Volunteers may choose to work a full day, part of a day, or many days.  Please email jen@pocomokemd.gov if you are interested in participating and would like to receive updates about volunteer dates for this work.  City staff will be present at all times and will instruct volunteers on the work needed. You do not have to be an expert in construction to lend a hand.  We hope you will join us in supporting your community, and enjoying time outdoors, with the Cypress Trail Project.
